Plated Coins
Coins stuck in base metal but given a wash of silver or some other precious metal. This expedient was adopted in inflationary times, from the Roman republic (91 BC) until the Tudor period. American cents of 1943 were struck in steel with a zinc coating, and in more recent years clad coins have produced similar results.
